Wisdom Wednesday | FAV: Kelsey’s Kloset

My FAVs, will be my “Feature A Vendor” post and this week is all about Kelsey’s Kloset! This fabulous boutique is part consignment and part new retail and I LOVE IT! Kelsey was also generous enough to donate the wardrobe and accessories for the Stylized Senior Model Session!Kelsey's Kloset | www.amylorraineblog.com

Tell us a little bit about you and your business.

My name is Kelsey; I am 21 years old & engaged to my high school sweet heart! With no retail experience or degree, I opened my own store at just 19 years old. The name literally reflects how I started my business. It all started with my closet. Since I like to be different I thought it would be unique to spell closet with a “K”! I strictly sold second hand items at my store until I stumbled upon some trendy jewelry lines that I couldn’t resist. I found that the mix between new and second hand items was the perfect fit for my store. Although I started at such a young age I take my business seriously & want continue living what once was only a dream!!

How did you get started in fashion and how long have you been in business?

My store has been open for almost two years now. Ever since I was little I have had a passion for picking out outfits and pairing things together. I always wanted to do what I love and be my own boss so I took a risk in 2011 and opened up my own boutique.

What are your favorite items currently in your shop?

Accessories, without a doubt no outfit is complete without them!!!

What is the most memorable experience being a boutique owner?

Getting a phone call to be on the local news, I was extremely nervous but it was by far the most memorable moment yet.

If you could give another business owner one piece of advice, what would it be?

Know your market & run your business your way. It makes you stand out from the others & if you love what you do most people will too!

If you weren’t in the fashion industry, what would you be doing right now?

Anything else you’d like to add?

Copyright VS Print Release | Amy Lorraine Photography

I wanted to write this Wisdom Wednesday post to help clarify the difference between Copyright and having a Print Release. I’ve seen “professional” photographers who offer all images from the session on CD with full copyright for $50 or less. Clearly they aren’t professionals because they wouldn’t be making enough money to actually consider it their profession and they would know you don’t just sell away your copyright, especially not for $50 or less.

Under the Federal Copyright Act of 1976, photographs are protected by copyright from the moment of creation. The photographer can edit, crop, sell, post, print, etc that image to their liking. If there are people or private property in the picture, it gets a little tricky. You don’t need permission to take anyone’s photograph, so you don’t need a model release form before hand. You don’t need a model release to post images on your blog, in a gallery, or even sell them. Most publishing companies or stock photo companies will not accept images unless you have a model release. I require them all for my portrait sessions, to cover myself in the event of legal problems and just to be considerate of peoples wishes. I understand some parent’s don’t want their childs photograph with their name on the internet. I’m always up for negotiating those requirements. It seems to be the industry standard to get a model release or property release for posting or selling those images. If a photographer sells copyright to a client, then the photographer is not allowed to use that photograph or publish it again without consent from the client. I know a photographer who sold the copyrights to her images from a wedding, she was compensated very well for her images but she can’t share those images on her blog, website, or even to her friends without permission from the client who purchased it.

Now for Print Release, most professional photographers will offer a print release with cd/usb of the images. They still should be anywhere from a couple hundred to over a thousand for all the images and the print release. This will entitle the purchaser to make prints of the images they have purchased however many times stipulated in their agreement. Some photographers will even sell limited print releases to advertising companies. Some print releases will only allow you to print with a certain printing company. So their images don’t get destroyed by Walmart or CVS printing labs. Mine do not include that requirement but I suggest using MPIX.com for higher quality and better looking images. Print release does not give you copyright. It does not give you the right to edit, alter, sell or even enter into a contest with those images. Please understand that just because you’re in the photograph, does NOT mean you have the copyrights to that image.

Please respect the artist taking your portraits. If you have any questions about what you can and cannot use the images for feel free to ask. I would like to say, I’m not a lawyer, so I can not say with 100% certainty that this is 100% true. This has, however, been my understand from my college classes and from other professionals in the industry. Please talk to a lawyer if you have any questions. The internet is full of great resources but it can also be full of fiction.

Why are Digital Files so expensive? | Amy Lorraine Photography

Depending on the type of photographer you go to for your portraits you will find varying prices to get “all the images on a CD”. I wanted to write this post to help you understand why they are so expensive valuable!

First things first, I do offer digital files in my collections and a la carte as I know some photographers do not. I offer the files because I know I would want them from my portrait sessions and I understand in such a digital age everyone wants the files. I also offer web sized images for sharing online and I now offer custom apps that hold the images from your session so you can share on your iPhone, iPad and iTouch! However, as an artist I want you to have your own works of art. I want you to smile every time you look at your images on the wall or in your album.

Now getting to the money part.. They really aren’t that expensive. It just seems expensive because you’re getting them all together. If you bought a 4×6 print of each file if would be more expensive than buying the digital files from me. And when you purchase the files you’re purchasing the rights to print these images whenever, wherever (although I don’t recommend just anywhere) and as many times you want for a lifetime.

And now to the problem with only getting the files.. Who knows what technology will advance to in the years to come.. that CD or USB might not be able to work on computers. Apple is already getting rid of CD drives on their computers, and that is part of the reason I use custom USB flash drives instead of CDs. If you get your prints from a professional photographer who gets their images printed from a professional photography lab, you will be getting the archival quality images. Those images will last you a lifetime.

“But theres another photographer who does the whole session and gives me the disc for X amount. Can you just do that?”

No, I can’t. Everyone runs their business differently. I choose to run my business as a boutique photography on location business. I want to spoil my clients from start to finish creating a luxury experience custom to their needs and wants, while giving them photographs they will cherish for a lifetime. My prices have been carefully figured out for my business. If you want that shoot and burn photographer or you want to stop in a chain photo studio, go to them! I’m sure they’d love your business. Everyone has their own style, preference and price range so find out what is best for you!

Hope this gives a better understanding but if you have any other questions feel free to comment or message me!

Amy Lorraine Photography!

The first real post of the new and improved blog.

I’m so excited to share with you guys all the new things that will be coming to Amy Lorraine Photography for 2013:

For those of you who have had sessions before, I’ve taken note on how to improve your experience! Starting in 2013 your session will include a Welcome Packet, a Pre-Session Consultation, On Location Portrait Session, 25-30 Edited Images in Gallery and the In-Home Session Premiere. I have also found the BEST labs and I will be including prints, canvsas, framed matted collages, portrait boxes and more!

The welcome packet will have everything you need. Besides the contract and model release, it will include our studio policy, helpful hints, dessert menu and a what to wear guide.

I know how hectic life can be so finding the perfect time to meet may be a challenge, so on phone is just as good as an in person  pre-session consulation. At that time we will discuss your location, your style and what you envision for your art. We will work out all the details to make the photoshoot go as smoothly as possible.

Our portrait session will be at your home or an on-location you choose. If you need suggestions on locations, I have a few of my favorite places in mind and would love to share them with you! For newborn session they are always done in the comfort of your home. I want to photograph the cute baby poses with hats and headbands along with photos in the nursey as well. You don’t need to worry about anything, I bring my studio to you!

I want to give you the best quality work and so I find the 25-30 best images from your session and create a slideshow for you. The images will be edited and will all have black and white copies.

The main attraction will be the Session Premiere! It has been designed as a special service for the families of Amy Lorraine Photography. I will actually come into your home to help you create your portrait art. You will get to choose an insanely delicious dessert from our menu, enjoy a beautiful custom slideshow and recieve special pricing for your premier night only! I have three collections which offer prints, canvas, specialty items and even digital negatives. Its pretty fabulous, if I do say so myself!

I hope you all are as excited as I am about 2013! Its going to be an AWESOME year!

The Session is $150 and includes the time and talent of Amy Lorraine Photography. Prints, digital negatives and other products will be available for purchase.

Prints 8×10 and smaller are $35

Collections start off at $750
